NEW, EFFICIENT WATER MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS WILL POSITIVELY IMPACT ROMANIA'S ENVIRONMENT
USTDA Awards Grant to Monitor and Control Water Supply
CONSTANTA, ROMANIA – Introducing new, efficient water maintenance and operations capabilities will positively impact Romania's environment, limiting pollution caused by sewage seepage and reducing energy usage and water losses. To achieve these goals, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a grant today to S.C. RAJA S.A. (RAJA Constanta), one of the largest water companies in Romania, for a pilot project to design and implement a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
The pilot project is intended to demonstrate the capability of a SCADA system to reduce RAJA Constanta's operational and maintenance costs and monitor and control its water supply.
David Hester, USTDA's Acting Regional Director for Europe and Eurasia, signed the grant on behalf of the U.S. government in Constanta, Romania. His counterpart, General Manager Felix Stroe, signed on behalf of RAJA Constanta. Hester said that the grant will contribute to the commercial viability of U.S. exports while assisting Romania with its development efforts.
"This $871,719 grant will fund a pilot project that will provide an integrated, effective, and efficient water management system, and highlight the capabilities of Motorola's SCADA technology," said Hester. "The pilot SCADA project will provide substantial benefits for Romania by strengthening its infrastructure and increasing its productivity."
"The U.S. is pleased to assist Romania with its efforts to meet its environmental commitments to the European Union under the Urban Waste Water Directive," he continued. "These efforts will ensure that both discharges from wastewater treatment plants and receiving waters are monitored."
USTDA funding will support radio frequency and coverage assessments; technical project design and training; and SCADA applications including software customization, programming, and equipment configuration and testing.
