USTDA Feasibility Study to Help Brazilian Water Utility Improve Efficiency

USTDA is supporting a feasibility study in Brazil that aims to help Aguas do Amazonas (ADA) become a profitable water utility by reducing non-revenue water (NRW) and becoming more energy efficient.  NRW is the difference between the volume of water supplied and the volume of water billed to customers, and ADA currently reports NRW losses in the range of 60%.  The study is helping ADA develop a strategy to reduce NRW so that it can more efficiently provide water to its 435,000 customers in Manaus, Brazil.

Following project implementation, there will likely be export opportunities for U.S. companies that supply:

  • Smart meters,
  • Production flow meters,
  • Efficient pumps and motors,
  • Data loggers and short message service (SMS) transmission equipment,
  • In-line water quality monitors,
  • Frequency of variable speed drives,
  • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for water distribution efficiency, and/or
  • Management information systems and energy management software.

For further information on USTDA's scope of work for this project, please see the press release or request the Request for Proposal through USTDA's Information Resource Center.

Halcrow (a CH2M HILL Company), the U.S. contractor selected to perform the feasibility study, kicked off its work in June 2013.  For more information on Halcrow's work with ADA, please contact Elio Arniella at (678) 530-4800 or
