USTDA Advances U.S. Solutions for East and Central Africa Energy Security

Arlington, VA â€“ The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will bring a delegation of energy sector decision makers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda to the United States to build partnerships in support of securing and modernizing East and Central Africa’s transmission and distribution networks, including through the deployment and integration of U.S.-made artificial intelligence solutions.

While in the United States from May 2 to 9, the delegation of approximately 15 government and private sector energy representatives will travel to San Francisco, California and Portland, Oregon. There, they will meet U.S. companies and see demonstrations of cutting-edge U.S. technologies that can improve transmission and distribution networks, as well as integrated AI-enabled grid control systems. Delegates will also meet with a mix of privately owned utilities, California’s Public Utilities Commission, and the Oregon Rural Electric Cooperative Association trade association, and will visit with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

USTDA will host a public business briefing in San Francisco on May 5, and a networking breakfast in Portland on May 8. Both events are platforms for U.S. companies to hear directly from the delegation about upcoming commercial prospects and engage one-on-one with delegates to showcase their grid security solutions. The U.S. private sector is well-positioned to provide trusted U.S. technologies, engineering experience, and high-quality equipment to support regional grids. Transmission and distribution networks play a vital role in sub-Saharan Africa, where rapid population growth, accelerating urbanization, and rising industrial demand are driving the need for secure, modern power infrastructure. The U.S. private sector is a recognized leader in advanced energy distribution technologies, which play a critical role in making grids more stable, efficient, and secure.
