For several years, USTDA has partnered with South Africa's eThekwini Electricity, a leading domestic power distribution company, to promote and implement energy efficiency strategies for the modernization and expansion of its grid. USTDA-funded technical assistance included a plan for an integrated information technology (IT) system to allow the company to tie customer data with supply information in real time.
eThekwini Electricity awarded the first phase of the project—a multimillion dollar outage management system—to General Electric following an open tender process. U.S. companies also will be able to compete in subsequent phases expected to be implemented in 2011.
In addition to creating opportunities for U.S. technology providers, USTDA's partnership with eThekwini Electricity enables more cost-effective service and faster response to network and system problems for the utility's 630,000 residential and commercial customers.
