The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is aiming to commission a comprehensive market study on four specific countries and markets: Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, and Nigeria. The market study is in line with the EBRD’s objective of supporting competitiveness, as it supports the key outcome of moving to higher value-added activities through greater integration of companies in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region (SEMED) in global value chains, and improved operating standards, by providing support to domestic companies for regional integration and internationalization focusing on sub-Saharan Africa. The specific objectives of the consultancy are to conduct an assessment of the economies of Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, and Nigeria including their main value chains, investment ecosystems, financial markets, and with a particular focus on micro-, small-, and medium-size enterprises (MSMEs); to identify the main trade limitations for MSMEs; and to support in devising programs in the four countries that will better support the SME sector and that will be complementary to existing offerings by governments, international financial institutions/development finance institutions and the private sector. The outcome of this research will be analyzed and presented in the form of a report, as well as a workshop alongside the SME Finance and Development team at the EBRD targeting business support organizations and MSMEs in SEMED.
